The Western Maryland Railway operated in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, running through some of the most scenic vistas in the USA. It was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, with a small passenger train operation. The lumber trade was also important to the WM and it's "fast freight service" was appreciated by all clients. In 1964, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) jointly filed for permission to acquire control of the Western Maryland and it became part of the Chessie System which, eventually, in 1989, became part of CSX Transportation.
