In an effort to provide fast "door to door" freight service, the Southern Pacific Railroad developed what would be famously known as "The Overnight" train to deliver critical cargo by the next morning. The first of these fast trains began service in 1936 and fielded unit trains overall black with high-speed trucks. The black cars stayed in service until 1956 when the scheme changed to overall silver.
