One of the first successful AC traction motor-equipped locomotives, railroads nationwide purchased large numbers of the SD70MAC. Although most commonly found on coal trains and railroads with heavy grades where their slow speed performance was essential, the locomotives wandered into all sorts of services and locations. Mergers and sales have increased the variety of paint schemes worn by the thousands of SD70MACs still in service today.
